The earth’s sea level is rising – and at an ever faster rate. The water in the oceans is expanding as it absorbs large amounts of heat trapped by greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Not only is more water flowing from ice sheets and glaciers into the ocean – the warmer ocean water is also taking up more space and contributing to sea level rise.
Climate change can be seen as an expanded concept of art; it takes on the role of a sculptor: land disappears, and the shape of the coastline is transformed into a new form by the force of the water. Climate Central, an independent organization of leading scientists, has created a map that provides online data and maps of sea level rise. Johanna Reich does not add new shapes, but reveals the forces of climate change. To find a form for this, the artist uses a technical imaging process she developed herself: Johanna Reich made Polaroids of the maps of the coastline of France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, which she scanned during the development process. The images reveal the old coastline and the „new“ coastline shaped by the water.
